Art Class Homework 2

This week we were tasked with drawing repeating objects on a textured background. First I started off drawing 2 books stacked but set apart so that you could see part of the book on the bottom. and it was laying on a bedspread. For some reason I just couldn't figure out how to make the bedspread look messy. I just don't know the technique yet. So I decided to start over with the books on a footstool I have. Just fair warning that this is not a piece I particularly like and I should have spent more time on, but it is what it is. Not everything will be perfect, I may not be happy with everything I draw...but I show it anyway.

Below is the finished product. I call it "Uncomfortable Reading". Mainly because the top book is a book I absolutely adore and fear all at the same time. I lost my mom to cancer a few years ago, and this book really helped me deal with it, but it's also really harsh to read at the same time. It's not meant to give you comfort, but it does in the oddest way. So it has some symbolism for me. The bottom book is a book about pledging a sorority. I am a sorority girl. I was in a social sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma and 1 honorary sorority: Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, and 1 honorary fraternity Phi Alpha Theta honorary history fraternity. But this deals entirely with social sororities and this one person's experiences. Good and Bad. So both are books that make some people really think and neither make anyone very comfortable.

I actually used colour in this. I thought it would have a better effect. They don't show up well here because I have a crap camera. I think I'm going to rectify that by buying a cheap but good digital camera so I can take proper pictures of my work.

It's nikki from LJ. Arrrgh--I hate doing textures like fabrics. They are hard to do realistically.

The books you drew are good. And your comments about Mom (sorry about her passing) makes this drawing more poingant and special, in my eyes.
