This past Saturday we had our midterm critiques and they were so interesting. Though I have to admit, when we were getting close to the end, I was just about done and my concentration was SQUAT! There were a few really good pieces, a few ok pieces and one that there was NO way she spent 15 hours on that project and there's no way she did research with it as well. She did a drawing of a glass bowl with a beta fish in it. She did a good job with the transparency, but honestly, there's no way that was a 15 hour job. Hers was the last piece we critiqued. Mine was the first. Brittany did this AWESOME take on a Klimt painting. I mean seriously stunning.
As for my piece I got some great feedback and sparked a lot of interesting conversation. Everyone loved the contrast and the sense of balance in the paintings. That I nailed the symmetry down very well. And she thought it was interesting that she could see the texture. In a lot of art like that, usually people do it so simply that you don't see the hand in the work. I wanted the opposite. I wanted it to be seen and felt in my work. I thought it was important to it. They saw things in it, that I didn't really notice myself. And none of it was BAD. I didn't really hear a negative critique of my work and that was awesome. I really felt like my painting up there along side some of the best people in that class, stood out.
Now all I need to do is figure out how I want to present it to hang somewhere. Frame and such. They are done on flat panel canvases. So I want to make sure that they don't warp over time.
I've already been "commissioned" to do the same piece only in different colours for a friend in Canada. How cool is that?
Anyway, I'm glad I did so well on it and it was so well received. Now its on to the next project where we are starting to focus on drawing people. This week's assignment is to draw 10 seperate eyes, 10 noses and 10 lips. That should be intersting seeing as how I don't know how to do either of those in proportion!
